Vespers on the Rocks
Magic is the basic stuff of the Vespers world. Its nature is volatile, unpredictable and fairly ill-defined by modern scientific standards. Its best description is maddeningly unspecific: magic is the power to make things act as they shouldn’t. And yet, as the great Preternatural logicians have noted, magic is truth. The world IS as science says it shouldn’t be and no small number of theologies, philosophies and labyrinthine dissertations have been spawned from that uncomfortable truth.
Magic has no governing body of laws, at least not universal ones. It almost seems to act the way people want it to act, except all the times when it doesn’t. As a result, most people try to keep a safe distance. There are those that dabble in it, some even with a degree of success, but none with a universal understanding. People who try and impose too rigid a structure on it tend to have a nasty habit of going mad. Conversely, those who do not attempt to understand their gifts sufficiently usually end up exploding. Most Awakened would sooner leave it alone whenever possible.
